Legs churning, feet pounding the pavement,
Moving faster and faster.
They're right behind you, you can't stop.
The barrier is ahead, so close.
You approach, and suddenly you're through,
You've beaten them.
You relax and start to sink into oblivion.
Deeper and deeper you sink.
You try to take a deep breath.
That's when you find yourself
Lungs bursting, heart hammering in your chest,
Head pounding, vision blurring.
You thrash your way towards the surface.
Is there a surface? Where is the surface!?
There, bright light, must be the surface.
Swimming frantically towards the light,
Pushing your limits, desperate, reaching.
You break the water's surface.
You gasp in the superheated air,
And you realize you're
Skin blistering, nerves awash in agony,
Flames licking at your body.
The pain is overwhelming, there is no respite.
But it must end, it must,
Your sanity is at stake.
Your mind is screaming.
The torture your body is enduring is too much.
